Appsc Group-1 Mains Paper 4

Bring out the prospect of development of alternative energy sources of India.

Alternative source of energy like solar, wind, tidal, geothermal etc are gradually been adapted and adopted, as the technology for efficiently harnessing these is being developed and the cost is adequately been reduced. Such alternative sources of energy are renewable by nature and have also the advantage of generally producing energy in a non polluting form. Incidently India has a vast potential to harness solar and wind energy. India’s North-west part, Eastern and Western coast have great potential of wind energy.

Bio-diesel in the recent times has opened a promising prospect. Several R and D projects have been taken up in the country to develop technologies to convert different non-edible vegetable oils to bio-diesel. Oil from Jatropha plants have also been used as bio-diesel. Attempts are being made to launch an operational programme on the use of these bio-fuels in the transport sector.

Field trial with ethanol blends in petrol and diesel have also been taken up in the country under several projects.

Realizing the need, the Government has set up an expert committee on Integrated Energy Policy headed by Kirit Parikh. The committee lays emphasis on realization of full potential of hydro-energy. It also suggests starting several technology missions on solar technologies for thermal and photo voltaic and biofuel, as well as bio-gas gasification.

Arithmetic Problems

In a cricket match Sachin and Viru scored century (more than 100 runs) and Yuvi and Gauti scored half century. Gauti scored 76 runs and Yuvi scored 12 runs less than Gauti. Viru scored 102 runs. The sum of the scores of all the four players is 442. How many runs did Sachin score?

Solution:

Given all the players scored 442 runs.

Given Gauti scored 76 runs.

Given Yuvi scored 12 runs less than Gauti. Therefore score of Yuvi is
 76-12=64.

Given Score of Viru is 102.

Therefore score of Sachin is 442-(76+64+102) = 200.

In a school there are 800 students. Out of whom 12 % are girls. Each boy’s monthly fee is ` 200/- and each girl’s monthly fee is 25% less than a boy. What is the total monthly fee of girls and boys together?

Solution:

Given the total number of students are 800.

Number of girls are 12% of 800

= 800 x 12  =96
    100

Therefore number of boys = 800-96 = 704

Monthly fee of a boy is `220/-. Therefore monthly fee of girl =

220x75  = 165/-.
 100
Therefore total monthly fee = 704 x 220 + 96 x 165

                                                = 154880+ 15840

                                                =170720
