Bureau of Indian Standards divided earthquake prone areas in the country into 5 zones

On 11.04.2012, a powerful underwater earthquake rock Western Indonesia, which triggered a Tsunami alert for countries along the Indian Ocean.

Disaster Management Bits: Assistant Engineers in A.P. Public Health and Municipal Engineering Exam -2012.


A hazard is a dangerous event. It could be Earth Quake, Tsunami and Floods.

A disaster is an event which result in widespread human loss, Loss of Livelihood and Loss of Property.

Cyclone "SIDR" hit Bangladesh on 15th November'2007.

Disaster Management activities may be conducted before a disaster, during a disaster and after a disaster.
 
Andhra Pradesh was severally battered by a cyclonic storm killing more than 10,000 people  on 15th November'1977.

12% of India's land is prone to floods.

Earthquake can happen at any time i.e., morning, evening and night.

Weapons of Mass Destruction bring a huge loss to life, property and environment.

Components of a School Disaster Management plan are (i)Hazard identification and assessment, (ii) Sensitization of teachers and School Management and (iii) Mapping.

Earthquakes and tsunamis constitute 8% of the world distribution of disasters.

Floods constitute 30% of the World distribution of disasters.

Important Bits on Disaster Management.


*  Hazard is an incident of accident caused by Earth quake, Tsunami and floods.

*  Hazard may result in Human loss, Property loss and cattle loss.

*  A cyclone had killed more than 50,000 in Bangladesh in 1970.

*  The word Tsunami was derived from Japanese language.

*  Tsunami can occur at any time of the year, day or night.

*  Central Emergency Relief Training Institute (CERTI) was founded on 29th April 1957 at Nagpur.

*  CERTI was renamed as National Civil Defence College on 1st April1968.

*  National Tsunami Warning System (NTWS) has come into force from 2005.

*  Staff of Disaster Management will be trained in First aid, Cleanliness and advices on mental /physical tensions.

*  The world wide share on Earth Quakes and Tsunamis in total Hazards is 8%.

*  The high power committee on Disaster Management, constituted in 1999, has identified 31 various disasters categorized into 5 major sub groups as
a) Water and Climate related disasters.
b) Geological related disasters.
c) Chemical, industrial and nuclear related disasters.
d) Accident related disasters.
e) Biological related disasters.

*      National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is the apex body for Disaster Management in India.

*            The National Executive Council is the executive committee of the NDMA.

*           State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) is headed by the Chief Minister.

*           District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is headed by the District Collector.

*       The general superintendence, direction and control of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) shall be vested in and exercised by the NDMA.

*     The command and Supervision of NDRF shall be vested in DG of Civil Defence and National Disaster Response Force.

*        The Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS) was developed with its operational center at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) near Honolulu, Hawaii.

*    In India, the Survey of India maintains a day-to-day maintenance of the tide gauge with the assistance from authorities of the Ports.

*    On 29th October, 1999, Super cyclone with wind speed 260-300 km/hr hit the 140 Km coast of Orissa.

*           On an average the life cycle of a cyclone takes 6 days.

*       The longest cyclone is Typhoon John which lasted for 31 days (August to September, 1994) in the north east and North West Pacific basins.

*           Around 8% of the total land area in India is prone to cyclones.

*           About 2/3rd of the cyclones that occur in the Indian coast line occur in the Bay of Bengal.

*      The Indian Meteorological Department is the nodal department for wind detection, tracking and forecasting cyclones.

*    Cyclone warning is disseminated by several means such as Satellite based disaster warning systems, radio, television, telephone, fax, high priority telegram, public announcements and bulletins in press.

*     Around 12 %( 40 million hectare) of land in India is prone to floods.

*     Around 68% of India’s total area is drought prone.

*     The components of Disaster Management team are
         a) First Aid Group.
         b) Rescue and Evacuation Group.
         c) Water and Sanitation.
        d) Trauma Counseling.

*     The components of the Disaster Management are
    a) Rehabilitation
    b) Reconstruction
   c) Prevention

Important Disaster Management Bits


*   The national Policy on Disaster Management was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2009.

* The chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority is Prime Minister.

*    National Institute of Disaster Management is located at New Delhi.

*   1st Indian Disaster Management Congress was inaugurated on 29.11.2006.

*  National Institute of Disaster Management publishes a biannual journal titled “Disaster and Development”.

*       By the following measures we can significantly reduce the impact of disasters on our people.  

a)    Better Planning
b)    Preparedness awareness
c)     Mitigation measures

* According to the World Bank, during the period 1996 to 2000, the approximate percentage loss of gross domestic produce due to disasters was 2.25%.

* National Disaster Response Fund is the result of the 13th Finance Commission.

*       Of the total 35 States/Union Territories in India, 25 are Disaster Prone
