Eight forms of Marriage
Brahma
Marriage of duly dowried girl to a man of the same Verna
Daiva
Father gives the daughter to the Priest as a part of his fee
Arsa
A token bride price of a cow and a bull is given as dowry
Prajapathi
Marriage without dowry and bride price.
Gandharva
By consent of two parties i.e. modern love marriage
Asura
Marriage by Purchase   ( Group-1, Preliminary-2012)
Rakshasa
Marriage by capture
Paisacha
It is the seduction of a girl while asleep, mentally deranged or drunk.

Of the above 8 forms, only first 4 were approved and permissible to the Brahmanas. On the basis of Verna, marriage is further divided into 2

Anuloma
Marriage of man in his own verna or below his verna. It was sanctioned by the Sacred texts.
Pratiloma
The marriage of a girl or woman in lower than her verna. It was not sanctioned by the sacred texts.
